Nicole's Reflection

Crocheting club was a club I created with my peers in order to learn crocheting skills, as well as benefit our community by donating clothing that we created. Through the journey of the project, we encountered numerous obstacles. These obstacles came from various parts of the project.
One of the most difficult parts within this project was the organization of the club. Organizing everyone within the group to cooperate together, as well as organizing a time that everyone could work on the project was difficult. Although logistical planning was difficult, it was easily managed. However, attempting to create a cohesive structure for the documentation of the project was difficult. This reflected the difficulties in working together on a project. Attempting to incorporate all aspects of people’s ideas within one project proved to be difficult. Additionally, the differences in people’s working style proved to be difficult to reconcile within one project. One of the challenges was picking the organization that we were going to donate to. There were different ideas, however we settled upon the Bowery Mission. We choose the Bowery Mission due to the organization being long standing, and committed to serving at-risk youth within the community. This aspect was incredibly important to me because I connect the most to people my age who are being helped by the organization. Knowing that the organization was benefiting youth, people like me who happened to be less fortunate made donating to the Bowery Mission important for me.
Additionally, I learned how to crochet, and different techniques implemented in the creation of clothing through crocheting. I was familiar with knitting and basic levels of crocheting, but could not create the pieces other people within the club could. Therefore, there were several members within the group that taught other members. As one of the members who was learning from other people, it was a learning process for the both of us. Through learning through other students, I was able to identify learning techniques that I found effective, as well as those that were not effective. Through the process, I learned that I learn best in an environment where I can watch the person creating the object, as well as follow along. However, there were key points within this that helped my learning. Shorter instructions were more effective for my learning, as well as time to practice on my own. After learning one step, I would often continue to try to repeat this step on my own, instead of having the teacher watch me. I found it beneficial to learn about the methods that assist my learning because I could apply it to other sections of my learning, both inside and outside of school.
Through the process of this project, I was able to develop my crocheting skills, as well as my organizational skills and interpersonal skills. Learning to work with other people within my group to achieve one common goal, rather than arguing about sections of the project was incredibly beneficial. Furthermore, I was able to learn methods that could benefit my learning throughout my career in high school and college. The project was difficult at times, but incredibly rewarding and I am certain that everyone within our group stayed up late attempting to achieve our goal. I found this project incredibly rewarding, and was able to become better friends with people that I had not previously had strong connections to.
