Georgia's Reflection

Crochet Club allowed me to not only learn how to crochet, but also increased my awareness about the prevailing issue of homelessness. The final products I along with my group made were donated to the Bowery mission. Learning to crochet presented a few challenges at first. It was difficult to create a scarf with stitches that looked consistent throughout and I kept making the same mistake for a while. With help from my group members as well as discoveries I made on my own, I gradually improved my work and I have now developed a skill that I genuinely enjoy and can also use after the termination of this project.  Most importantly, I learned that homelessness is on the rise in New York. This project not only provided me a creative outlet, but every time I would crochet, it would make me think of all the people that weren’t as fortunate as I am, that didn’t have a home to go to that day. Even though we could not provide much, this small action of giving is still very significant.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the progress of our project. I believe we chose a good group of people to work together. We all have different talents and some of us had different responsibilities than others. In addition, since I did not join a group with a lot of my close friends, the CAS project allowed me to get to know people I wouldn’t normally talk to as much.
When we first started with our project, I couldn’t help but think: is this all worth it? Wouldn’t it just be easier to raise money to buy a few scarves and hats as opposed to raising money for materials to make scarves and hats with? It seemed more efficient that way, but as we moved along with our project I began to realize the purpose of what we were creating. Crochet Club was important because it allowed us to produce something almost from scratch. Things tend to have a different effect on people if they are made rather than bought. It was our way of telling people without homes that we are there for them and care for their needs.
